Showing Off Your T-shirts in the Dead Of Winter

If you are a man who is especially fond of his t-shirts winter must be a difficult time for you as you are forced to hide your t’s under layers or relegate them solely to bedtime wear. You might be tempted to brave the elements in nought but your t-shirt, perhaps putting a thin cardigan over it, but remember that being inappropriately dressed for the elements is never fashionable and mostly just makes you look foolish. In short, it attracts the wrong kind of attention.

The trick is to subtly layer the t under warmer items that while warm, are at the same time revealing to what’s underneath. The first go-to layer is the jumper. For best results pick something with a loose neck (so no turtle necks) like a cardigan or a V-neck. In the past couple of years the cardigan has undergone a renaissance so there are options out there besides your bog standard. I’ve always dreamed about being able to pull off a shawl collar cardigan, but I just can’t pull one off for whatever reason. Though equally there are knits of various material and thickness that can keep you toasty while showing off the maximum amount of t-shirt underneath.

Another, slightly sloppier, option is the zip-up hoodie. Unlike the un-zipped variety, the top of the hoodie typically gives you a cardigan-like ‘v’ to show off whatever it is you have beneath. The best colour options are dark; i.e. greys, black, or dark blues. You typically want to stay away from anything flesh coloured for items of clothing that go near the face. Also, bright colours will take the emphasis away from the t you are supposed to be trying to show off.

Jackets are another way to layer up your t without hiding it. Typically you will want to have your jacket somewhat coordinated with your trousers. For example I have never had the chutzpa to go double denim (aka jeans with a jean jacket), and it being almost universally abhorred I wouldn’t suggest it. Otherwise, leather, suede, or cotton are all good alternatives. My favourite jackets to pair with jeans and a t-shirt are ‘mechanics coats’ that come down high on the waist. To tuck your shirt in for this look though.

The other option is to embrace the t-shirt as the base layer of your wider ensemble in the anticipation that once you transition into warmer environments like a bus or a building, you will eventually have to shed said layers in the effort to keep from overheating (and this is when your t-shirt would come out.
