Making It Real
Before I moved to Singapore, I’d never even been to a movie alone—let alone ever felt lonely. In New York I lived with my college boyfriend and had a large group of friends. But I moved to Singapore not knowing a soul. Socially, the first few weeks were hard: no one to shop with on weekends or to grab a drink with after work. But soon I realized it’s much easier to make new friends living overseas than it is back home; each single woman must replace her core group of gal pals, so there’s a lot of networking. And because you’re all sharing the same experiences, there is an instant and lasting bond. My best friends today are the ones I met while living overseas. —Joanne, USAID (more…)
